The Other Side of the Street

Life is different on the other side

Yesterday, I wrote about a Spirit House that seemed to be party central for the resident Spirits. The evidence seemed to suggest lots of fast driving, drinking and the general mayhem that often occurs during round the clock partying. But the Spirit world, like its human counterpart, is made up of many different personalities as was evident to me as I looked literally across the street at a Spirit House that was the polar opposite of party central.

After crossing the street, always a challenge in Bangkok, I approached a Spirit House complex that was as different to party central as possible. This house was quiet and serene. There was no carousing or wild antics. Every surface was carefully designed, pristine and shiny. Nothing was out of place. This Spirit House was a place of quiet and contemplation with everything organized and in its place. The whole complex was set way back from the street so that the noise and pollution would not interfere with the meditative atmosphere. (I also assume that the noise raised during the wild parties at the Spirit House across the street would not make it this far.)

The two Spirit Houses, located directly opposite from each other, represent opposites of personality and character. Perhaps these two Spirit Houses actually are a representation of the character of Bangkok – on the one hand wild, energetic and edgy and on the other very quiet and meditative. Or perhaps the contrast means nothing and is just a way for me to take more pictures of various Spirit Houses and write stuff about them. Either rational can work for me.

  1. This spirit house looks like a scene from the original Star Trek. Very early on. Like Captain Kirk in his form fitting suit will be tempted by some perfectly coiffed young nymph like creature , with calming lute music playing and a treatise on harmonious living. All the while , a short distance away, mayhem ensues, donkeys bray , drunkenly and pink fire trucks cone racing in, shattering the erstwhile calm.

    • You should write this blog. That was awesome. I could never have said it better. You have definitely caught the true flavour of the tension between the various protagonists. Brilliant!!

    • You can be sure that there will be many more Spirit House stories. There is only so much other stuff that I can write about.

  2. I view my role as supportive, building on the original concept and broadening the idea. The idea however, remains your alone.
